Construction Week October 2 – 6, 2017 Raises Awareness of Opportunities in Construction Industry

The Spokane Home Builders Association, along with many other associations and construction companies across the nation, will celebrate Construction Week October 2 – 6, 2017.  The mission of Construction Week is to promote awareness of the construction industry as a safe, exciting and rewarding career option.

“Many construction firms across the country are facing significant workforce shortages, especially within the largest segment of the workforce, hourly craft workers,” says Joel White, Executive Officer of the Spokane Home Builders Association.  “These shortages are forcing firms to increase pay and benefits and adopt labor-saving tools and methods. Yet these strategies can only go so far for an industry that remains heavily labor intensive.  That is why we need a new, state-by-state focus on recruiting the next generation of construction workers into the industry.  Establishing a special week focused on the many benefits and rewards of working in construction will go a long way in helping bring new workers into high-paying construction careers.”

The construction industry offers high paying jobs and ranks high in job satisfaction. There are numerous career opportunities for students who want to enter the workforce immediately after high school and for those who want to attend an apprenticeship program, a 4-year college or a 2-year technical school.

Construction Week is a time to celebrate the built environment and showcase those who create it, increase public dialogue about the shortage of construction workers and bring construction to life for students, educators and parents.  More than a week-long event, Construction Week is a year-round commitment to raise awareness of the vast opportunities available in the construction industry.

The Spokane Home Builders Association represents over 700 members across the Eastern Washington counties of Ferry, Grant, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens and Whitman.

Proudly presented by the Spokane Home Builders Association, and sponsored by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery and Bosch, the Fall Festival of Homes provides the public with a FREE tour of newly constructed homes.

With the housing stock low, now is the time to consider a new construction home.  Mortgage rates remain low and new homes can be affordable while offering amenities that an older home may not have. New homes are significantly more resource efficient and environmentally friendly and are designed to accommodate today’s busy lifestyles with open floor-plans, flexible spaces, improved safety features and low-maintenance materials. For those looking for ideas for a home renovation or DIY project, the Fall Festival of Homes offers the latest building techniques, designs and home-interior trends.

Start the tour at one of our four “host sites” including Eagle Ridge in South Spokane, River Ranch in North Spokane, Rivercrest at Coyote Rock in Spokane Valley, and Villages at Stonehill in Liberty Lake. Show magazines and maps will be available at all host sites. To locate the host site nearest you, visit www.SpokaneFestivalofHomes.com.

PRESS RELEASE: SPOKANE HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES SPOKANE CITY COUNCIL ENDORSEMENTS

(Spokane, Wash.) – The Board of Directors of the Spokane Home Builders Association (SHBA) voted this week to endorse Tim Benn for Spokane City Council District 1, Andy Dunau for Spokane City Council District 2 and dual endorse Matthew Howes and Brian Burrow for Spokane City Council District 3.

Recommendations for endorsement were made following a process that includes responding to a written questionnaire, background screening by the non-partisan Candidate Verification service and interviews with members of the SHBA.
“The SHBA Board of Directors is pleased to endorse these candidates for Spokane City Council,” said Jim Breidenbach, 2017 President of the Spokane Home Builders Association. “We are encouraged that these candidates expressed values to be collaborative leaders on the City Council, to promote a business friendly environment and are committed to make Spokane a great place to live, work and play.”

The Spokane housing market continues to feel the strain of a shrinking inventory and low rental vacancy rate. It is critical that the next City Council be prepared to make infrastructure investments that accommodate anticipated growth and bring forward infill housing development recommendations. These candidates all represent a fresh energy to the City Council needed to drive the reforms necessary to support the building industry.

“The Spokane Home Builders Association has long been an advocate for common sense public policy that allows for the development of a variety of market based housing options,” added Arthur Whitten, SHBA Government Affairs Director. “In the City of Spokane it is paramount that we elect leaders who recognize that there is a dwindling supply of buildable lots and understand that overregulation drives the cost of housing up, pricing Spokane families out of the American dream of homeownership. These candidates will be terrific members of the City Council to achieve positive
housing solutions.”

The Spokane Home Builders Association consists of over 700 members across Ferry, Grant, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens and Whitman Counties. Members include builders, developers, subcontractors, suppliers and industry service providers. Founded in 1947, the SHBA is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
